2017 Ancienne Pinot Noir

At Lightfoot & Wolfville there is a constant connection to the generations before us and the many ahead. A sense that this is simply our turn, our watch. Ancienne, meaning old/ancient, is a collection of the wines that we feel best represent “our turn” – the ultimate expression of our two estate vineyards and the pinnacle of our winegrowing efforts.

 The label, styled to look like a page torn from an old book, depicts an illustration of a red-tailed hawk, representing our commitment to working in harmony with nature and promoting biodiversity through our farming practices. The hawk is holding a mayflower, a symbol of Nova Scotia, in his beak and an old Acadian farming tool in his talons; a tribute to those who cared for this land before us.

The 2017 vintage was fairly warm and dry, providing the ideal growing conditions for our Ancienne series still wines. Fruit quality was exceptional with minimal disease pressure and ideal phenolic and sugar ripeness.

All grapes for this wine were hand-harvested from our organic and biodynamic estate vineyard in Avonport, Nova Scotia and hand-sorted to yield the highest quality juice. Fermentation took place using wild/indigenous yeasts to encourage the purest expression of the Oak Island Vineyard. Aging of 18-months in French oak – mostly old/neutral barrels – gave support and texture to the fruit without overshadowing the terroir.

This wine is certified Biodynamic by Demeter.

Tasting Notes

Vibrant ruby-red in the glass. Wild raspberry and dried cranberry nuanced by earthy and floral notes. Light to medium bodied and balanced with fine, silky tannins, bright acidity, and a savoury finish of impressive length. An elegant style of Pinot Noir that represents the vibrancy and finesse that Nova Scotia’s distinctive cool-climate is gaining reputation is becoming known for. 

Fitting pairings include roast pork, fatty fish such as salmon, dishes featuring mushrooms or fresh herbs, and wild game.
