2025 Small Lot Kékfrankos Rosé

Kékfrankos (also known as Blaufränkisch) is a deeply pigmented, cool-climate red vinifera variety originating in Central Europe that is not widely planted in Canada. As part of our ongoing exploration of cold-hardy grape varieties capable of producing exceptional quality red wines in our growing environment, we first planted one acre of this distinctive variety in 2014, followed by a second acre in 2017.

This experimental Small Lot Rosé was crafted using the traditional saignée ("bled") method. Following a few hours of skin contact, a portion of the free-run juice was gently drawn off and fermented separately in stainless steel, creating a rosé with delicate colour, bright fruit expression and enhanced texture. The remaining fruit continued on to red wine production, concentrating both wines while showcasing the versatility of this unique variety. All grapes were hand-harvested from the south-facing slopes of our certified organic (Ecocert Canada) and biodynamic (Demeter USA) Oak Island Vineyard before undergoing wild fermentation. 85 cases produced (12 x 750 mL).

Tasting Notes

Ballet slipper pink in the glass. The nose opens with rhubarb and lemon zest, underpinned by fresh crushed stone minerality. The palate is bright and energetic, revealing tart rhubarb, green strawberry and a twist of citrus before finishing with a refreshing sea spray salinity.

Reminiscent of the Vin Gris wines of southwest France and the Camargue, this rosé is a natural pairing for freshly shucked oysters, pan-fried calamari or smoked trout.
