2021 Small Lot Mystery Pinot
This limited release marks the second single-block offering from our distinctive 2014 “Mystery Pinot” planting on the southfacing slopes of the "Oak Island” Vineyard in Avonport. In our quest for extraordinary Pinot Noir, the vines for this block underwent meticulous propagation and custom grafting over several years, sourced from cuttings believed to be a unique, early ripening, powdery mildew-resistant clone of Pinot Noir.
Within the vineyard, we’ve noticed a fine, white leaf covering — an indicator often associated with Pinot Meunier — yet the fruit clusters closely resemble Pinot Noir in both appearance and flavour.
Ampelography experts have suggested a potential link to the famed Wrotham clone of Pinot Noir, known for the distinct characteristics observed in this block. The Wrotham clone, a rare clone with a storied past, was serendipitously discovered as a wild grapevine growing on a stone wall near the village of Wrotham in southeast England. It has been theorized that the Romans brought cuttings of this vine to England 2000 years ago. Wrotham Pinot was brought to North America in the 1980s, where legendary oenologist Dr. Richard Grant Peterson of the Napa Valley helped to raise its profile and allure through the high quality of his Blanc de Noirs and still Pinot Noir projects. Given that even DNA analysis can not yet entirely differentiate within the Pinot families, the exact viticultural ancestry of our cherished vines remains a “mystery”.
From the warm and lush 2021 growing season, this block was hand-harvested on October 21st. All fruit was 100% crushed and destemmed prior to wild yeast fermentation. Aged 20 months in used French oak barriques. Aged an additional year in bottle prior to release (bottled September 15th 2023).

On the palate, it’s light-bodied with a refined texture, offering silky tannins that glide effortlessly, complemented by vibrant acidity that adds both structure and elegance to the finish.
